Roman “Bench” Chernenko is a fan of the football club “Dnipro”, a representative of the team “Perspective 14".
Roman Alexandrovich Chernenko was born on May 25, 1995 in Dnipro. From a young age, he was keen on sports and stood out for a staunch patriotic stance. He was engaged in contact martial arts, among which he preferred classical boxing. Having come to the fan sector at the age of 15, he actively supported the team, often attending away matches of his native club. On the stand he joined the first team of the football team “Perspektiva 14”, which was actually the next generation of older and more famous teammates from “MyD”.
Among the fans, Roman met people with close views and convictions, who became his true friends. They were accompanied by revolutionary events in Dnipro, when local fans and patriotic youth had to defend the city by force in street clashes with pro-Russian “titushkas”. With the beginning of the Russian invasion in eastern Ukraine. like many of his comrades, Roman was going to stand in defense of the Motherland. In August 2014, during the Ilovaiska operation, Azovets “Derzky”, who was a friend of the guys from “Perspective 14” and had a significant impact on the young team, died. After this loss, Bench finally decided to go to war.
Joining Azov in September 2014 he went to the reconnaissance unit, where he became the calculation number of the registry office. Roman's brothers recall that he quickly mastered the military business and had considerable zeal, boldly performing reconnaissance tasks. On February 10, 2015, the Pavlopil-Shyrokinskaya offensive operation began. Despite the general uplifting mood before the liberation of their native land, the Azovites realized that the fighting would not be easy. As if anticipating something wrong, the day before, Bench wrote a farewell letter and left it to his brother with the nickname “Obama” to pass on his last words to his mother.
On February 14, after the successful clearing of Pavlopil and Lebedinsky in the composition, “Bench” took part in the offensive on Shyrokyne (Donetsk region). A battle ensued, during which his calculation by the AGS destroyed the life force and equipment of the enemy. Enemy armed formations and Russian terrorists drew heavy weapons and began shelling Shyrokyne from the SAU. Unfortunately, the fragments of one of the shells interrupted the life of Roman Chernenko. One of the fragments injured his leg, which the medics immediately paid attention to, fixing the bleeding, but the others pierced the armor vest and lungs of the brave Warrior.
By the Decree of the President of Ukraine dated May 15, 2015, he was awarded the Order “For Courage” III degree (posthumously). A memorial plaque in honor of the fallen Warrior decorates the facade of the Dnipropetrovsk railway lyceum, where Roman once studied. Two weeks after the death of their devoted fan, Dnipro football players honored his memory by taking to the field wearing T-shirts with a photo of “Bench” before the match against Lutsk “Volynna”. Another Azov from Dnipro - Denis “Skiper” Kotenko, who fought in a full-scale war during the defense of the capital, had a tattoo with a portrait of his friend and brother Roman on the body.
